Physics Society EOH Information

Next meeting:
SATURDAY, JANUARY 22 -- 1:00 in 144 Loomis. We will start construction of projects. Hopefully if EC has their act together by then, I will also have information on funding requests and how much money we got (or didn't get). If you are in charge of a large project that needs a lot of space for construction, I can get you space in one of the 3rd floor labs to build and store your project.

Project descriptions:
Project Description
E&M demos Electricity and magnetism demos including Jacob's ladder (small and big one), ring shooter, electromagnets, electric motor, etc. This project is intended for high school students, older audience members.
Hot air balloon A small mylar balloon that floats up and down the stairwell. This project may or may not be done this year depending on whether or not there is enough time
REU Undergraduate research projects in physics and astro. Students who have previously done research will give short talks and present posters. This is an opportunity to advertise your research and practice presentation skills.
Trebuchet A catapult-like device that will throw projectiles over large distances. Two will be built -- the larger one will be filmed and the video will be shown at EOH, and the smaller one will be used for live demonstrations.
Holography A laser setup used for making holograms will be shown and explained at EOH. Holograms that were made with those lasers will also be shown.
Pyrophone A group of glass tubes that uses fire to make sounds. A fun project for pyromaniacs and little kids.
Bubble room A room that has lots of bubble stuff including different wands, 2 bubble walls, 2 bubble pools (encase yourself in a bubble), 2-D bubbles. Mostly intended for little kids, but more complicated info on bubble geometry will be presented to older audience members.
Lecture demos All the fun lecture demos done in the physics 11x classes plus some of the larger Physics Van demos. These include shoot the monkey, vortex generator, plasma ball, bicycle wheel (angular momentum demo), etc.
Fun with LN2 Physics Van LN2 demos such as LN2 balloons, frozen flowers, LN2 cannon plus other miscellaneous small demos such as Bernoulli ball, Magdeburg hemispheres.
Cloud chamber A fish tank that uses dry ice, alcohol, and a slide projector to show particle tracks. This is not an official project, i.e. we will not need someone to be there explaining it all day. Most likely we'll shove it in some corner of Loomis with a couple of posters so people can take a look at it.
Linear Accelerator Also known as the rail gun. The rail gun is a set of metal rails that uses simple e&m principles to accelerate projectiles to high speeds. No we won't be using human targets, really...
Physics of toys A large see-through windup toy that shows how the inner parts work and make it move.
