Past 1996/1997 Physics Society Events

8/28/96: Quad Day

9/5/96: General Meeting, 7:00 pm, 144 Loomis
The first general meeting of the year. The officers introduced themselves and the society, we served Liquid Nitrogen ice cream, we made an explosion, and everyone played with the Liquied Nitrogen.

9/13/96: Physics Society Picnic, 5:30 pm, Illini Grove
The barbecuing event of the year! We had a great turnout and plenty of food for all!

9/18/96: Speaker Meeting, 7:00 pm, 144 Loomis
Professor Mike Weisman discussed 1/f noise.

10/2/96: General Meeting: 7:00 pm, 144 Loomis
We discussed a T-shirt and logo design contest; the winner will receive a free shirt and possibly some other cool prizes. We also began developing ideas for EOH. To end the evening, we ran an electrical current through a pickle to make it glow-- truly incredible!

10/11/96: PIZZA: 5:30 pm, Papa Del's
The Physics Society, being the wild and crazy bunch that we are, headed out to Papa Del's and filled up with pizza! And as always, PS provided the drinks for free to all members!

10/24/96: Speaker Meeting: 7:00 pm, 144 Loomis
Doug Swesty gave an excellent speech on something. I'm not sure what, but I heard it was awesome.

11/8/96: PIZZA: 5:30 pm, Papa Del's
Once again, the society had the urge for its favorite meal! And once again, the society covered for drinks!

11/13/96: Speaker Meeting: 7:00 pm, 144 Loomis
One of the society's favorite professors, Mats Selen spoke to us about heavy quarks. Much of the speech helped explain to the society members the history of quarks and exactly how particle accelerators, such as the the ones at Cornell University and Fermilab, work.

11/20/96: The CAVE: 6:00pm, Beckman Institute
The Society went out to the University's own research mecca to check out the CAVE, a very cool project dedicated to virtual reality and its applications.

2/15/97: Demonstrations at Market Place Mall: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
The Society did some of its cool demos in conjunction with the Astronomical Society and the Physics Van.

3/14 & 3/15/97: Engineering Open House: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
The 1997 Physics Society EOH displays were a huge success! We won two awards for our lecture demostrations: first place for Best Presentation and second place in the "Back to the Basics" category. Other displays included a giant Newton's Cradle made from bowling balls, a hot air balloon, a computer simulation of collisions, a Focault Pendulum, the Jacob's Ladder from EOH 1996, and a Rube-Goldberg device (aka The Physics Machine, aka The Ultimate PEZ Dispenser).
