Subject: Physics Society's first meeting
I must say that we had an outstanding first meeting. The cup of enthusiasm runeth over. I promised a meeting summary and here it is:
Ok, first of all, info, info
1)I will be putting the flyers that we gave out at quad day outside the physics society office, Rm. 239 loomis, just case you don't have one, you lost it, or your roomate ate it or something.
2)The physics society web page is http://www.physics.uiuc.edu/groups/physics_society/ , but it would probably do you no good to visit it now because it is not yet updated, but keep that in mind for future reference. It would probably be best to email all officers for right now at physoc@lists.physics.uiuc.edu if you have questions.
3)Dates:
Fri. Sept. 12th, 5:30 p.m picnic at Illini grove, woodsy area between allen hall and PAR
Fri Sept. 26th Pizza at papa dels, meet at 5 outside physoc office, Rm. 239 loomis
If you have special vegetarian requests for the picnic, let us know. I personally think i might whip up a couple of my vegetarian favorites from my beloved moosewood cookbook. oh yeah.
4)Most of you will definitely be interested in subscribing to Bluesheet, which is the department weekly calendar of events, including desciptions of weekly colloquiums and group meetings such as mesoscopics meetings for you solid state types(yay!). So send an email to majordomo@alecto.physics.uiuc.edu and the subject should be Bluesheet and the message, subscribe bluesheet. You won't regret it!
5)I want to remind you that I am still in the process of planning the undergraduate research presentations, it is not too late to let me know if you would like to do this. For those of you who are interested in giving the presentations, i will later email you about possible dates and how i'm going to arrage it. Put please let me know as soon as possible!
6)Faculty lunches: I am just about to send a letter out to faculty in regards to this now that i've gotten things appoved and what not. I hope to have some sort of list of professors and their research for everyone at the picnic on the 12th. I hope to ultimately post this list outside the physoc office and email it out to everyone. This is a new program so any kind of input on this is very good.
7)We have been asked to help out the department at the Saturday physics lectures geared towards high school students. Professor Willenbrock would like a couple of physics majors to be present at each lecture to help answer questions about what it is like being a physics major here, etc. This is my number 2 list i will bring to the picnic so that people can sign up for certain saturdays. These lectures are very good and just worthwhile to go see so we'd appreciate your help on this.
Ok, as for the meeting, we introduced the programs each officer is planning for this year, some important things to keep in mind:
1)Physoc newsletter. I would really like to do this, i also think it would be good to distribute to professors to get them more involved, but I NEED HELP!!!!!! Please, please, there are so many hours in the day, someone needs to help me with this.
2)Engineering Open House. Matt's in charge of this and i think the big project for this year is to design a hovercraft but there are many more ideas and we need more, EVERYONE is encouraged to give out ideas. You can email matt at m-wenger@uiuc.edu if you want to ask him more about EOH or give him ideas. The more people involved the better, hopefully we can get all of Loomis smothered in physics toys.
We also made some nice ice cream, did the liquid nitrogen in the bottle explosion, and ate and talked and made merry. I've already outlined all of the information for everyone so please, for my sake, KEEP THIS EMAIL.
As for the question, i've gotten some nice responses, no i don't have a new question for you, sorry, but i promise not to disappoint you next time. I will admit that I do not have a concrete answer as of yet, and to tell you the truth i am quite befuddled. I will tell you though that according to my source (Thinking Physics by Edelstein) the bubbles should move together. I want to reiterate that the question is basicly what happens if everything was reversed and you had nothingness surrounded by matter, would the 'nothingness' be attracted as things are gravitationally attracted normally.
See you guys at the picnic on the 12th, don't forget to KEEP THIS EMAIL!
